14.09.2020 - In mid-August 2020, the competent authority in Saxony-Anhalt issued a statement on the usability of fertilizers containing elemental sulphur. The authority takes the view that commercial products with a sulphur content of less than 98 % S are not allowed in organic farming. This interpretation calls into question the usability of a number of sulfur-containing fertilizers in organic farming as well as the corresponding commercial products permitted in Germany.
In consultation with the BÖLW industry association, we have examined the facts of the case. The result is the following BÖLW statement, which has been sent to the responsible authorities: To the BÖLW statement
The products will be provisionally labelled in the Input list for organic agriculture in Germany with the following note: "Products with elemental sulphur containing less than 98 % S are not classified by the competent authority of Saxony-Anhalt as being in conformity with EC organic standards.“
We are working together with the BÖLW to clarify the status in Saxony-Anhalt quickly and will keep you informed.
